Diet: As Simple As Eating Less (Not).
Imagine if there was a diet which actually worked.  A diet which does what it says it will, on the label.

It doesn't seem so far fetched, does it?  That there's to a perfect diet out there that will lead you to the promised land of skinny jeans, bikini bottoms and a stomach you could play noughts and crosses on. 

After all, isn't it just calories in vs calories out?  It seems so simple.  

The problem is that diets fail miserably more than 95% of the time.  Which is about as big a problem as Superman swallowing kryptonite.  

There is a fundamental diet issue which the en vogue diets and influencers often fail to consider: the evolutionary mismatch between your genes and your jeans (i.e. the modern, consumer driven world).

From medical Dr's "prescribing" meal replacement shakes to your local ripped, tight bodied trainer (and therefore an authority on all things nutrition),  the diet industry is out of control.

Consider this: if you book a physical with a doctor, he or she will likely take you through the exact same, or a very similar protocol, no matter if you book that physical in Newcastle, New York or New Dehli.  

In nutrition, there is no such agreed upon protocol to assess someone's current diet and to formulate an effective long term plan on how to lose weight.  Imagine getting just 3 nutritionists in a room and having them agree on a similar diet protocol for someone.  

There isn't a common "physical" for diet, because diet is at the mercy of much more than just simple calories in and calories out arithmetic.  Sure, in a perfect world it would be that simple.  But we don't live in a perfect world and us humans sure aren't known for being perfect.

Dietarily, we'll continue to be at the mercy of our genes, environment, marketers, "fitness influencers", cultural practices and the hustle and bustle of our lives.

When the 2 most popular diets are studied - low fat vs low carb diets - the study groups lose a statistically similar amount of fat, so long as both groups eat the same amount of protein, and adhere to the diet.

So as long as a diet is somewhat well designed, meaning there's an element of calorie control and perhaps even a reasonable amount of protein included, then diets tend to yield similar results.

All diets work short term and almost all diets fail long term, because they don't take into account the volatility of being a person.

They work until your dad gets cancer, your job gets more intense, you're too busy one week, your kids birthday is happening or you go to the coast for a week.

This lack of complexity features in almost all diets.  There's no "if this, then that" strategy included.

Diets fail because they are rigid and fragile.

For a diet to work long term then it must be flexible and anti-fragile.  A flexible diet means that there are strategies you have on hand to employ whenever you need to deviate from your plan, that don't ruin things for you.  An anti-fragile diet means that your diet gets stronger in the face of volatility, not weaker.

But most of all, a diet has to become part of your lifestyle, a lifestyle you had better enjoy, or yet again, the diet will fail.  Your dream lifestyle and a diets success will always be inextricably linked because everything we do in our lives, we do for a particular feeling.

Feel a crappy feeling too often, like hunger, tiredness, low performance or boredom, than, given the opportunity, you will break that feeling up with something that cause pleasure: food.

We always kick off a diet program with a detailed consultation with a client that’s frank, honest, tremendously enlightening and motivating.

Right along side the client, we design a diet that is easy to prepare, to stick with, that's flexible and to be successful on.

In our experience the biggest worry a client has when they come to a nutritionist or a coach is "what are they going to make me eat?!"

We never prescribe diets that the client isn't 10/10 confident they can do.  After all, it's the clients diet - not ours!  Our job is to use our experience and knowledge in just tidying things up a little, creating some structure around the diet and offering as much support, advice and balanced answers to questions that we can.
The Scientific Method.
The scientific method, in a nutshell is test - do - retest - modify.

So we always get measurements, plan the diet, encourage our client to do the best they can sticking to the diet (with some handy modifications!) and then get more measurements at the end of the week to see if the diet worked.  

If things went as planned, great! If things didn't, we make some adjustments, do some coaching/learning, and away we go again.

That's how you can use the scientific method to find a diet that works.  It's actually rather simple - it just takes a committed coach and client.

To get the perfect result, it's just about the client being consistently average, checking in every week and being ok at implementing small adjustments over time.

We teach clients how to follow their diet in social situations, at work and when things are happening with the kids.  We encourage clients to live epic lives whilst on their "diet."

We challenge clients to learn, to grow, to become better versions of themselves and to change their relationship with food.
